Real Talk & Leadership

Real Talk & Leadership is a leadership and advocacy program that is uniquely tailored to various school sites in Sacramento City Unified School District and Elk Grove Unified School district. This program invites students into a safe space to be able to discuss and explore topics that they’re passionate and/or curious about: immigration rights, healthy relationships, mental health & wellness, substance prevention, voting rights, sex and gender identity, climate justice, racial injustice, and more. From their interest, students are trained to carry out a youth-led advocacy project/campaign by the end of the school year.

Program Goals

  • Increase positive behaviors, reduce risk behaviors, and improve the self-concept of at-risk youth in order to help them make healthy choices and reach their full potential
  • improve academic engagement and achievement and help low-income, at-risk youth set goals for their future by providing

How does this program make a difference?

This program strives to help students hone in the ability to analyze their own strengths and weaknesses, set personal and vocational goals, and have the self-esteem, confidence, motivation, and abilities to carry them out (including the ability to establish support networks in order to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change); the ability to guide or direct others on a course of action, influence the opinions and behaviors of others
